The orange glow of sodium lamps brings little warmth to the frigid platforms of Northfields station, holding out in the vast suburban wilderness between central London and Heathrow airport. As the station warden trudges past with a heavy snow broom, we exchange a few remarks about the prodigious snowfall, glad for the presence of a fellow human.
