Newtonian interference colours caused by reflections between two surfaces. Different wavelengths interfere at slightly different distances. The phenomenon was first described by Robert Hooke in Micrographia and subsequently analyzed by Isaac Newton. Birefringent substances generate these colours under polarized light as their refractive index changes with direction.
